This is a large conical tree with blue-green upturned needles. The seeds in the cones are food for birds and small mammals. This tree can live as long as 400 years. It is somewhat shade intolerant. It can grow in a variety of soils and is one of the first to recolonize a disturbed area.
It likes slopes with a southern exposure and is often used as an ornamental tree elsewhere.
