Cornus obliqua can be easily confused with Cornus sericea due to their similar reddish/brown bark and tendency to grow in wet habitats.
A great field check to distinguish between the two species is to check the pith. C. obliqua has a brown pith (after one year growth) where C. sericea has a white pith. (Soper, Shrubs of Ontario)
