This shrub will grow in thickets, the edge of prairies, slopes and on roadsides. (Missouri Plants) Seeds need a cold period before germination can occur. Cuttings can also be taken in the fall for reproduction. Fruit eaten by Northern Cardinal, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker and Eastern Bluebird. Small mammals and birds take advantage of its shelter. Shrub is resistant to disease. (Wildflower Centre) Garden Uses: This shrub is effective in shrub borders, along streams, or ponds, near buildings, or when planted as a screen. Can be useful because of its ability to grow in poor soil. (Missouri Botanical Garden) The white berries appear on red stalks. The bare branches are conspicuously red in the winter. Deer browse on dogwood year-round.
