It is very tolerant and adaptable to most dry soils including limestone areas making it a good low maintenance ground cover. It can even take mowing. In the eastern part of the continent, it is usually found in uplands and in the western, it tends to grow in lowlands. (USDA PLANTS Database, Wild Flower Centre) NatureServe states that this plant is native to BC, AB, SK, MB, ON and NWT. For QC, NB and PEI it is an invader. This plant and its colonies are essential cover for many small desert animals. It is important browse and food for elk, mountain sheep, antelope, mule deer, all varieties of rabbits, chipmunks, gophers, ground squirrels and numerous varieties of rodents. (USDA PLANT Database)
