Today is World Earth Day 2024, and the theme is “planet vs. plastics”. The goal is to highlight the issue of “the plastic pandemic” that has caused our planet to be overrun with plastic pollution. Microplastics (any plastic under 5 mm in length) are a real concern, showing up in the water we drink, the food we eat, and even in our blood.
Tackling this issue won’t be easy, but a good place to start is with banning single-use plastics and by calling for a reduction in plastic production. Adjusting your own plastic consumption when possible is great too and can help inspire others to do the same.
Another thing to remember is that we shouldn’t just do this for the planet, we should do it for ourselves. Helping the environment thrive and be healthy also benefits us, it isn’t a purely altruistic act. And that’s okay! Too often we separate ourselves from “nature” and forget that we are a part of it. Just as we can harm the earth with plastics and pollution, we can help and heal it too.
“And as we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.”
